PETALING JAYA: Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong has been appointed the state’s opposition leader by the Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership.
“It is my great honour to lead members of the opposition in the Johor state assembly to play the role of a constructive opposition to ensure the state government lives up to the highest standards of integrity while delivering a good life for the millions of ordinary members of Bangsa Johor,” said Liew in a statement on his Facebook page
“With all stakeholders, including the state government, Johor civil service, the speaker and clerk of the assembly and the wider public, I look forward to strengthening the legislative and democratic processes in the Johor state assembly.”
In a statement today, Johor PH said Liew’s appointment came after the Johor PH leadership council held a meeting in Muar on Friday.
Stating that it would submit a letter of notification to the state assembly’s clerk today regarding Liew’s appointment, Johor PH also hoped that the Barisan Nasional-led Johor government would maintain the reforms instituted by the previous PH-led state government.
“Among them include recognising the position of the opposition leader, the setting up of more select committees and the appointment of an opposition representative as the state Public Accounts Committee chairman,” it said.
It also reminded menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi of the RM200,000 annual fixed allocation for all assemblymen, regardless of their political affiliation, as announced by the previous menteri besar, Hasni Mohammad, while tabling the state’s 2022 budget last November.
The statement was signed by Johor PH chairman Aminolhuda Hassan, Johor PKR chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and Johor DAP deputy chairman Teo Nie Ching. Aminolhuda is also the Johor Amanah chief.
PH won 12 of the 56 seats in last month’s Johor polls, with DAP contributing 10, PKR one and Amanah one.
BN won the state elections after claiming 40 seats.
